What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient form of exercise originated in India about 5,000 years ago, and has been adapted in other countries in a variety of ways. The Sanskrit word yoga means “to add”, “to join”, “to unite”, and “to attach”. Yoga can take on meanings such as “unification”, “oneness”, “connection”, “combination”, “contact”, “union”, “method”, “application”, “addition” and “performance”. Yoga is also meant for “balance”, “equilibrium”, “harmony”, “tranquility” and “deep contemplation”. However, in modern age by the word yoga means exercises that focus on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing. In literature the word “yoga”, first appeared in Katha Upanishad. Alexander the Great reached India in the 4th century BC. One of Alexander’s companion Onesicritus, wrote “Indian yoginis practiced different postures – standing or sitting.” In ancient yoga system, physical and breathing exercises were the main components of yoga. Later on,  around the 1st century AC, philosophy entered into the yoga system and diluted the value of physical exercises. However, in the modern age, with the help of science yoga is again back with its original form of vigor and physical exercises.
